Summer learning journey week 1 day 2

Setting sail (Day 2)
Activity-  Imagine that you were on board one of the wakas. On your blog, write a short letter to a friend telling them about your voyage to New Zealand. In the letter be sure to tell them how you feel about moving to a new country.

Day 1- We set out on the beautiful, still sea. leaving behind the loved ones to find a new land. At first we were moving slowly but as the minuets passed by the waka was going faster and faster. I was concerned and scared for the journey ahead of us. Our families and our Country will be proud of us because we will find a new land to live on. My home was getting smaller and smaller as we drifted out further in the sea, my home stared to fade out of my sight.

day 2- It's my second day on the waka and to be honest i'm not feeling great, I am hungry, thirsty, tired and I miss my family, the salty air fills my lungs as I take deep breaths to calm myself. I barely know anyone on this waka I have no one to talk to, I am so lonely. The waves get bigger and bigger as we go along. The clouds get darker and darker, this worries me for whats ahead of us. The sun starts to set and another day comes to and end, yet the leader is still shouting out commands.

day 3- It's my 3rd day on this waka and the sun is rising, i have made new friends but I still miss my home. It gets colder and colder as we go  further. I can't wait until we have arrived at our destination. Everyone knows everyone and I'm the left one out. I close my eyes and drift off to sleep.

day 17- I now know everyone on the waka and I'm not missing my home as much as I was before. I have seen the bad side of going on this journey but i have also seen the good side. I am use to the food and the water know so the trip is not so bad now.

  1. Mōrena Emily,

My name is Jordan and I'm the Kootuitui (Papakura, South Auckland) cluster manager. I'm also fortunate enough to be blogging with you this summer!

Thank you so much for writing such a fabulous piece, it truly was a pleasure to read. You're quite a talented young lady, aren't you? I can't believe you're only 10 years old; your writing is incredible!
I like how you've written this piece as though it were a journal log, ka pai. I really appreciate the descriptive use of language too. It sounds as though the journey was rather challenging for you, but you overcame it in the end while still reflecting on the bad and the good points.

When do you think you'll make it to a new land?

Maybe you could try and add a photo to this blog post, to keep your wonderful writing company.

Keep up the great mahi Emily :)

    Cheers,

    Jordan.

  2. Kia ora Emily,

My name is also pronounced Emily, but it's spelt a little differently. My name is spelt "Emiely". Along with Jordan, I'm another blogger at the Summer Learning Journey! :)

What a beautiful blog post you have created. Like Jordan said, you have done a great job using descriptive language, describing your voyage! I like how you have created journal entries. It was interesting to follow your journey on the voyage and read about how your thoughts changed over time.

I hope you've been having a great summer holiday! Aside from participating in the Summer Learning Journey, what other things have you been up to?

Keep up the great blogging! The Summer Learning Journey Team can't wait to read more of your expectional blog posts!

  3. Tena koe Emily,

My name is Megan and I part of the Summer Learning Journey team who will be commenting on your posts over the summer.

Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed reading your incredible piece of writing. You have an amazing talent for words and literacy. I felt as though I was following your journey across international waters and could visualise the dark clouds rolling closer and the large waves as you get further out to sea. Creating a scene that your reader can visualise is an important part of writing and allows them to feel apart of your story.

What do you think you'll find when you arrive in New Zealand?

Keep sharing your talent with us. We would love to read more of your writing.

    Have a beautiful day,
    Megan :)
